What Is MyMusicLab?

MyMusicLab is an innovative online program created to help music students master course materials in music appreciation and sight singing courses. MyMusicLab may be used in a traditional classroom setting, for a hybrid course, or for online courses.

MyMusicLab includes self-assessment opportunities and customized study and learning resources for students. It also provides a comprehensive grade book for instructors so they may see exactly where their students are at any given point in the course.

FOR MUSIC APPRECIATION COURSES

Assessment

Assessment activities include:

  • Needle-Drop listening activities help students identify key musical styles and composers.  Instant feedback directs the student to resources to build listening skills.
  • Chapter Pre-Tests allow students to test their knowledge prior to completing the exploration activities within MyMusicLab. Students receive study plan links back to text material based on their individual results.
  • Chapter Post-Tests allow students to see exactly what they know and more importantly what they don’t know after completing the chapter’s activities within MyMusicLab. Students receive instant feedback and study plan links so they may go back and brush up on key concepts and material.
  • Part Exams help student prepare for mid-terms and finals by reviewing topics across multiple chapters.

Explore

Each chapter within MyMusicLab contains an Explore section. This section contains the following learning resources for students:

  • Automated Listening Guides build listening skills through the use of full-length streaming audio paired with the Listening Guide content found in the textbook.
  • myeBook (eText) is an electronic version of the printed textbook with the ability to highlight, take notes, conduct full text searches, view multiple page layouts with zooming, and more!
  • Expand Your Playlist is a list of related works and has been compiled as iMixes and published through the iTunes Store.
  • Animated Musical Notation brings musical notations to life as animated streaming video clips so students may see and listen to the notation as it plays.
  • Elements of Music Tutorials help students explore the nature and function of each element to learn how they work together to create the music we hear.
  • Documentaries give brief overviews of the cultural backgrounds giving students a historical context for the music.
  • Videos of world music and opera performances enhance students’ understanding of these musical forms. 
  • Flashcards, many with accompanying pronunciations and musical examples help students to master key concepts and terminology. Special shuffle, quiz, speed drill, and print features help reinforce the content for students.
  • Inside the Orchestra allows students to encounter the instruments of the standard orchestra, learn how the parts of the orchestra fit together, and study an orchestra as it performs five representative works from multiple musical eras.
  • Streaming Audio Player allows students to listen to full-length streaming audio selections found throughout their accompanying textbook.

FOR SIGHT SINGING COURSES

Assessment

Assessment activities feature:

  • Pre-Test, Post Test, and Chapter Exam activities comprised of sight singing exercises from the textbook. These activities help build skills and master key concepts. Activities feature:
  • Voice Recording Tools: Students are able to record the sight singing exercises and submit recordings to their instructor.
  • Personalized Audio Feedback: Instructors can access any of the students' recorded submissions directly from the course gradebook, then listen, enter a grade, make comments in writing, or record a response in return.
  • Accompaniments: Selected sight singing activities feature accompaniments to help students practice their singing.
